Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Lettuce is like eating wet cardboard you can really taste the plastic bag they must keep it next to the oven. They should learn from McDs and wendys they should be ashamed.

I am not sure what I am supposed to write about a restaurant that I have frequented over the past 19years more than any other. Heck I remember the days when you got table service here... My only issue is that a number of years ago they changed the recipe for pizza and the new version is not as good as the old and we stopped ordering it. Aside from that, the food here is superb. Our go to favorites are the Chopped Salad, ribs and the Chicken Parm. The meatball sandwhich is excellent as well and on days when I want a little extra jolt in the cold months, I go for the Pasta Al Arrabiatta loaded with garlic to chase away the germs. Having it nestled in the same building as Portilios is a great option for families as the menu expands to burgers, etc. Overall a top notch place that I could not live without

Our recent visit to Barnelli's was my first here. We had the Pesto Chicken & Mushroom Pasta and Veggie Fettucine Alfredo. Both of which were fresh, creamy and yumm!! We also had a side order of Garlic Bread which was excellent and a Baked Potato - that was a let down though. The potato was not baked enough. The restaurant is more of a self serve concept; our order was ready quickly. Nice ambience but too many elements and bit overwhelming for my taste. Would return for the food and quick turnaround with the order.

I still agree that Barmelli's offers great food & different meal options than Portillo's. I still agree that the Ribs are one of the best tender ribs you can get anywhere. But I want everyone to know that their Pasta dishes are Top Notch!!!! Their Vodka sauce is better than any other Italian restaurant. Yes, I said it!!! Their vodka sauce is thicker & has a spice to it. Every time, I order pasta with vodka sauce elsewhere, I compare it with Barnelli's. No place comes close. If you want regular spaghetti, I strongly urge you to get their Meatballs. Their meatballs are so tender, they fall apart when you cut into them (better than the ones at Mambo Italiano). When you order a pasta dish, you get bread & butter. I like to order a side salad to compliment my meal, it's like I'm dining out. Even though their chopped salad is delicious & filling, I'm more of a "meat & starch" type of girl. Barnelli's cannot be a fast food place because their food is similar to (if not better than...) any authentic Italian Restaurant.

Barnelli's is connected to Portillo so you have a choice to get a hotdog/hamburger at Portillo OR get pasta or salad from Barnelli's. Its a huge open, loud dinning room (not helped by the fact they call out when your order is ready at Barnelli's over a loud speaker). I tried the baked mostaccioli with meatballs. My husband had one of the paninis. Both were quite tasty. Overall, it was probably more of a 3.5 due to the crowded dining room and loud noise, but I love the big variety and the food was pretty good.

Have gone here for lunch in the last 2 days! Chopped salad - delicious, lots of ingredients, so fresh and so flavorful mmm The pasta with vodka sauce - is so creamy, a little spicy, amazing sauce, sooo gooood... add chicken and it's perfect This is inside Portillo's, it does get busy in the building during lunch, but the Barnelli's line is always very quick, so don't be afraid. p.s. the chocolate cake is perfect, soft, creamy, and very chocolaty.. get some :)

When I reviewed Portillos, I included comments about Barnellis. Does not hurt to add them here. Barnellis has some really good food . Their ribs are excellent (ask for an extra sauce) and their pasta w/ meat sauce is very good (get an extra meat sauce). The chopped salad is awesome. I eat here about once every week or 2 because it is a 45 minute round trip to get there from Gurnee. But well worth the trip. Get a burger for lunch, take home pasta for dinner and a chopped salad for tomorrow's lunch. Yep!!!

I get the ribs when I come here not to mention that the cole slaw is good as well.

OMG they have so many good pastas!!! Do you know, I'd always assumed that their pasta was the typical boring mastaciolli with no seasoning... BLAH. BuT ALAS!! THIS IS NOT your typical boring pasta place. It's SO good! And the portion is huge, so I always have extra for the next day. They'll tweak it to your liking, and you get some bread , and mmm-mmmm good! Plus this location is so bit, but it's always busy. It's a fun place though. So much to look at.

i love (everything at) barnelli's!

Barnelli's is self serve. Large seating area but you line up to order and pick up food, proceed to seating area if eating in, get your utensils, booster chair if with toddler, pick up your own to go box if you have any leftovers, and put away the toddler seat, your own plates and tray... I felt like I was in a cafeteria. A lot of workers milling around and I'm wondering what is their purpose? The food was good but pricey. The atmosphere is not worth the time. Too much 'memorabilia' to really enjoy it.

It's not your normal fast food joint as it looks like the pasta and sandwiches are made to order. Their baked potato soup is sooo good - but skip the beef barley (too salty). The pastas can be sort of pricey for lunch, but it's a fair portion and really, more of a sit down lunch entree than a speedy lunch.
